Poem: ‘Diptych: Abscission and Marcescence’

I liked reading that the leaves do not fall in autumn;
they are pushed. Capture the cool practicality of nature,
and the human tendency to fall
for appearances, illusions.

When light and heat decrease,
a layer of cells begins to spread where the leaf stem
meets the twig, like cauterization.

Dormant tree with death holes looks ahead
without a flicker in its heartwood.

Everything is mostly grey,
sleeping or decaying.

A few brittle curls cling
to the bones of the willow tree—dead
but life will not let them go,
as if its shreds
still has something to give.

They both look abandoned.
and noble in their permanence.
